Dance on Earth

Dance

Living in the moment of dance is a unique and spontaneous moving meditation.

It elevates mood, vitality, balance, strength, stamina and cognition.

We might call it a state of grace. Indeed, numerous gnostic spiritual traditions have embraced various forms of dance to bring them to ecstatic states, closer to God, for millennia.

Maybe it has something to do with the practice of recalling our spirit, to inhabit this body with so much articulate intent and playful attention.

One thing is for sure – once we begin to experience the liberation of those great and small breakthrough moments on the dance floor, emotionally and physically – once we begin to recognize how much better we feel after we have danced – how much fun the practice is, the more we let go into the moment – there is no going backwards.

When we dance alone, or alone together in a group, we may find ourselves responding to spontaneous impulse and decision making to interpret musical expression through our body-mind in space. And when we are dancing with a partner, leading or following, interpreting our partner’s impulses, a similarly highly active attention to possibilities is engaged.

Intelligence is what we use when we don’t already know what to do, it is freestyle dancing in particular that keeps us on our toes as a most profound metaphor and tool for living.

This is the practice. This is the dance.

Music

when we allow the e-motive forces of music to inspire spontaneous movement from the deepest places of our body mind, small or large, we find ourselves living an expression of total freedom in the moment

This dance in response to all the rich textures of music can be a metaphor and a practice for how we live our lives, on and of the dance floor.

Destiny doesn’t mean that your life has been strictly predetermined. Therefore, to leave everything to fate and to not actively contribute to the music of the universe is a sign of sheer ignorance. The music of the universe is all-pervading and it is composed on forty different levels. Your destiny is the level where you will play your tune. You might not change your instrument but how well to play is entirely in your hands.

“Dance disappears almost at the moment of its manifestation. It is an extreme expression of the present, a perfect metaphor for life. Dancers sculpt space in real time, working inside a form that is constantly in a state of vanishing. We have no artifacts. I find it strangely beautiful to be creating something that is made of us – made of our breath and blood and bones and minds. Something that is made of the space we occupy and made of the space between us. We embody both the dance and its disappearance.”
